What happened

President Donald Trump denounced South African jurist Navi Pillay after the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded her the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for promoting peace and international law. The committee said the prize affirmed the rule of law and international justice amid political attacks on those institutions. Pillay, 85, is a former U.N. human rights chief and international judge who chaired a U.N. inquiry that concluded Israel committed genocide in Gaza. Israel rejects that finding, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office accused Pillay of spreading fabrications. Trump told a Syracuse rally he deserved the prize, citing eight settled wars, while calling Pillay a little-known U.N. liberal who hated Israel. The award cannot be transferred.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Trump’s response as personal grievance, while stressing that Pillay’s award defended legal institutions under pressure. CNN lingered on his repeated complaints and challenged his peace-prize case, noting that parts of his war-ending record involved conflicts that did not exist or were unresolved. The Boston Globe emphasized Pillay’s career in international justice and the committee’s rule-of-law message.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets treated the episode as another turn in Trump’s long pursuit of the Nobel, with sharper attention to his case for deserving it. The New York Post highlighted Trump’s argument that his record on wars, hostages and hostile regimes made him the rightful winner. Breitbart News leaned into claims that the committee discredited itself by choosing a liberal U.N. figure seen as hostile to Trump or Israel.
