What happened

Elon Musk has given more than $276 million to Republican candidates and political groups since July. The spending makes him the largest known donor in this year’s midterm elections. The money is boosting Republicans as they try to protect congressional seats amid voter frustration with President Trump and his policies. Musk had said in May 2025 that he planned much less political spending, after giving heavily to help Trump win in 2024. A spokesperson for Musk’s America PAC said the investments give Republicans a fighting chance in key races. Musk gave more than $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund. Campaigns and certain political action committees must file new finance reports by Thursday.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Musk as an outsized force in Republican politics, stressing the historic scale and the stakes for Congress. The Boston Globe emphasized that his spending made him the dominant known donor in the midterms. The Daily Beast cast the money as a rescue effort to help Republicans avoid a wipeout. CNN lingered on Texas, noting Musk’s business interests there.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed Musk as a key Republican advantage, while adding scrutiny of a Democratic candidate in Texas. Just the News emphasized that his spending strengthened Republicans against cash-strapped Democrats and could help protect the Senate majority. The same outlet highlighted audio it said raised questions about James Talarico’s absence, despite his campaign’s flu explanation.
