What happened

India’s opposition parties, led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, marched in New Delhi toward the Supreme Court to protest a voter-roll revision and demand Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. Police detained thousands of protesters during weekend demonstrations, including youth leaders and journalists, as security forces blocked rallies in central Delhi. Since the revision began last year, election authorities have removed more than 130 million names from voter lists. Opposition parties allege the changes favor Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party and hit minorities harder; the BJP and Election Commission deny bias. The Supreme Court chief justice declined a meeting, saying the issues belong in pending legal proceedings.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the story as a clash over democracy, stressing state pressure, voting rights and rising resistance to Modi. Al Jazeera described a crackdown on dissent, saying detentions and alleged custodial violence created a “climate of fear”. The Guardian kept the focus on opposition claims that minority voters face disproportionate harm.
