What happened

DHS said New York authorities declined to honor more than 16,000 ICE detainers between Jan. 20, 2025, and Oct. 8, 2026. An ICE detainer asks local or state officials to notify ICE before release, or hold someone up to 48 hours for federal custody. New York local jurisdictions set their own ICE cooperation policies, and Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a law limiting some cooperation on civil immigration enforcement. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin blamed Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Hochul, saying federal enforcement would continue despite sanctuary policies. Hochul’s spokeswoman said New York is not a sanctuary for violent criminals and said DHS misrepresented the facts.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the story as Democratic-led defiance of federal immigration enforcement, with public safety as the central concern. Breitbart News blamed Democratic sanctuary politicians for shielding dangerous criminals while federal officers try to protect Americans.
