What happened

President Trump denied involvement in the federal search of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington-area home, after Homeland Security Investigations agents carried out a judicially authorized warrant obtained by the Justice Department. The department said the search was part of an ongoing criminal investigation; reports citing sources familiar with the inquiry said it concerned immigration paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child. Omar came to the United States as a child refugee from Somalia and became a citizen in 2000, making that history central to the reported inquiry. Omar denied wrongdoing and called the search political targeting. Trump called her “totally crooked.” The government has not disclosed the evidence it sought.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets cast the search as an election-season breach that looked designed to damage a Trump opponent. The Boston Globe emphasized that such a step so close to voting ran against Justice Department norms. PBS NewsHour centered Omar’s charge that federal power was being used for intimidation. MS NOW questioned the investigation’s basis, pointing to childhood paperwork and legal-deadline concerns.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the search as a serious legal reckoning rather than a political stunt. The New York Post tied the raid to long-standing suspicions about Omar’s immigration, personal and family history, and quoted an unnamed source describing the search as backed by compelling evidence. Fox News highlighted claims that Omar and her Democratic defenders were applying a double standard after Ilhan Omar previously said "no one" was above the law.
