A free recap of the day’s biggest stories and how each side covered them.

What happened

The Treasury Department imposed more than $1.21 billion in penalties on Bank of America for anti-money-laundering and sanctions violations. The bank admitted it willfully violated the Bank Secrecy Act by failing to keep adequate controls and file required suspicious-activity reports. The OCC said the bank had been under a December 2024 order to fix its anti-money-laundering program, but had not completed required corrective actions. Bank of America said it worked with regulators, invested in technology and staff, and remained committed to remediation. Treasury said the bank failed to timely report more than $5 billion in suspicious transactions. The settlement requires an independent third party to investigate missed suspicious activity.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: Joe.My.God., under the headline “Bank Of America Fined $1.2B Over Money Laundering”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the case as a test of whether major banks face hard consequences for compliance failures. Townhall stressed Treasury’s enforcement posture, saying financial institutions that fail to enforce clear violations will be penalized. Just the News cited the Treasury Department’s warning about Chinese money-laundering networks and southwest-border illicit finance risks.
