What happened

President Donald Trump signed unconditional pardons for diesel mechanics Zachary Czubak and Patrick Fleming at a Wasilla, Alaska, rally for Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan. The men had pleaded guilty in 2022 to Clean Air Act violations, and co-owner Michael Hanzuk had also received a pardon. Sullivan faces Democrat Mary Peltola in a competitive Senate race that could affect control of the Senate. Alaska has not elected a Democrat to the chamber since 2008. Trump urged voters to back Sullivan over a similarly named Republican challenger and called for repealing ranked-choice voting. Prosecutors said the mechanics tampered with vehicles, while Trump said they were punished for keeping engines running. The election is November 3.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the Alaska stop as a warning sign for Republicans in a state that normally backs Trump strongly. The New York Times stressed that his presence showed pressure around a possible Democratic upset. Daily Beast lingered on personal spectacle surrounding Trump’s circle and online aftermath. AlterNet emphasized affordability and energy strains, saying Trump treated those concerns as Democratic messaging.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the pardons as a correction to unfair prosecutions, tying them to Alaska’s harsh conditions and energy economy. Fox News centered Trump’s defense that the mechanics kept diesel vehicles working in extreme cold. Washington Times highlighted Trump’s argument that Republican energy policy brings jobs and investment while Democratic policy threatens them. Daily Mail focused on his promise of $5,000 payments if Republicans keep Congress.
