What happened

President Donald Trump told a campaign rally in Bullhead City, Arizona, that government leakers of sensitive military information should be shot. He called them “the scum of the earth.” Trump appeared to be referring to Operation Midnight Hammer, the June 2025 U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. He alleged The New York Times and CNN had reported details about bomber departure and arrival times. Trump said he delayed or called off the operation for two days after discussing the security risk with Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine. He said the mission later proceeded. Trump called the strikes defensive, saying Iran must not get a nuclear weapon. Some attendees cheered and applauded.

How each side covered it

Left-leaning outlets framed the remarks as a demand that leakers face death, then followed the attack into Trump’s treatment of the press. Mediaite centered the penalty language by using Trump’s own words rather than softening the threat. Raw Story linked the leaker comments to a broader attack on news media.

Right-leaning outlets led with the execution call while giving more room to the security-risk explanation and rally setting. The New York Post paired the repeated execution language with Trump’s account that the disclosure affected raid timing. Daily Mail lingered on the rally’s drift into grievances and attacks.
