What happened
Elon Musk gave more than $158 million to Republican campaign groups in September, including a major boost to the Senate Leadership Fund. He has contributed about $366 million to federal political committees this cycle. In late August, Musk agreed to help finance support for Texas Republican Ken Paxton after a fundraising proposal from the fund. Before the effort, Democrat James Talarico was dominating Texas television while Paxton had no ads on air. Polling reviewed by Musk’s team and Senate Republicans showed Paxton weakening. The money helps Republicans defend Texas without pulling as much from Senate fights in Kansas and South Carolina. Talarico raised $64 million last quarter, and the race remains close.
How each side covered it
From the left
Left-leaning outlets framed Musk’s spending as a sign that Democrats had made Republican Texas unexpectedly hard to defend, not as routine late help. The Guardian emphasized Talarico’s challenge, saying Republicans were struggling to match his campaign’s spending. Raw Story cast the money as an emergency rescue for a weakened GOP nominee whose problems party leaders had long warned about. The Boston Globe cited Noah Rothman warning Democrats not to underestimate Musk’s political operation.
From the right
Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: Washington Examiner, under the headline “Elon Musk goes big on 2026 elections, but not from center stage”.
