What happened

U.S. and Western officials said a message from inside the White House directed the Defense Department to slow Starshield service for Ukraine. A Ukrainian Defense Ministry source said terminals were working in motion again, but only at speeds up to 100 miles per hour. Starshield is the U.S.-controlled military version of SpaceX’s Starlink, which Ukraine uses for battlefield communications and drone operations. The limit came as President Donald Trump pressed Kyiv to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries. A senior U.S. official said Trump did not request the restriction, while Ukrainian officials said Washington called it a White House decision. Four Republican senators joined Democrats in seeking a Pentagon inspector general investigation.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets treated the limit as a White House-driven intervention, with Trump’s role still contested and SpaceX cast as secondary. HuffPost emphasized officials saying the order came from inside the White House. CNN linked the dispute to Trump’s energy priorities and pressure on Kyiv. Raw Story highlighted warnings that the change put lives at risk.

Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: Just the News, under the headline “Ex-Trump security official backs Starlink, explains why it shouldn’t be used for Ukraine attacks”.
