The Cleveland Plain Dealer, Ohio’s largest newspaper, reversed its no-endorsement policy to endorse Amy Acton. Several venues reportedly dropped stops on Vivek Ramaswamy’s statewide tour as backlash grew over his attack ad. The ad features Acton’s estranged mother, Donna Arthur, calling Acton a liar and disputing her childhood account. Acton says her stepfather sexually abused her at 12, her mother stayed with him, and she has not spoken to her in decades. Ramaswamy defended the ad as answering attacks on his mother and challenging Acton’s claims. Acton called the race a test of decency. The election was just over a week away.

How the left told it

Left-leaning outlets framed the endorsement as a moral stand against using childhood abuse in politics, not just a campaign development. HuffPost highlighted the editorial board’s argument that silence was untenable when the choice was consequential. MEDIAite focused on a Fox host who shifted after opposition research and accepted a retaliation rationale.

How the right told it

Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: Daily Mail, under the headline “Venues ditch Vivek Ramaswamy tour as backlash grows over mom ad”.
