What happened
Updated Oct 29, 6:00am ETPolls and election forecasts point to major Democratic gains and control of the House. Republicans hold a 218–214 House advantage, leaving little room for losses in midterms that often punish the president’s party. The campaign is unfolding with low approval for President Trump and voter anger over high fuel prices, tariffs and the war in Iran. Polling has limits: it overstated Democratic support in the last three presidential elections, but was closer in the past two midterms. Democrats are targeting Republican-held districts, including seats Trump carried by double digits, while calling themselves guardedly optimistic. Republicans retain Senate advantages, helped by a spending edge in competitive races.
How the left told it
Left-leaning outlets framed the forecasts as a possible turning point against Trump, while warning that Democratic confidence could still outrun the vote. The New York Times cast a sweeping win as a potential end of a political era. MS NOW stressed that polling can show voter mood without settling close outcomes. TPM warned that Trump allies could contest wins through certification fights.
