Nancy Pelosi rebuked Abdul El-Sayed and Zohran Mamdani for not endorsing Israel as a Jewish state. The former House speaker called the Michigan Senate nominee’s and New York City mayor’s views “wrong” and “more than concerning.” Mamdani has said he supports Israel as a state with equal rights, but not one that privileges one religion. El-Sayed has similarly rejected organizing a country around an ethnic, racial or religious group. El-Sayed is challenging Republican Mike Rogers in a closely contested U.S. Senate race. Pelosi said their views did not reflect congressional Democrats, while El-Sayed says criticism of Israel is not antisemitism. Pelosi had endorsed Haley Stevens, who lost to El-Sayed. The Senate election had not yet taken place.

How the left told it

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: The New York Times, under the headline “Pelosi Calls Mamdani’s and El-Sayed’s Stances on Israel ‘Wrong’”.

How the right told it

Right-leaning outlets framed Pelosi’s rebuke as a warning about progressive Democrats’ Israel stance and party tension before voting. Breitbart cited Pelosi’s description of El-Sayed’s views as “more than concerning,” casting the dispute as about antisemitism rather than normal policy disagreement. Washington Examiner emphasized the rebuke as “notable pushback” from a leading Democrat in a battleground race.
