What happened

  • Democrats won many House districts Republicans had redrawn to favor themselves, with the effort appearing to cost the GOP seats in some states.
  • President Donald Trump pushed Republican-led states to redraw their maps before the midterms, starting with a Texas plan intended to gain five seats.
  • Democrats won four of the five targeted Texas seats and all four Democratic-held seats targeted by Florida’s new map.
  • California countered with its own map targeting five Republican-held seats, an effort that also appears to be benefiting Democrats.
  • Counting continues in some races, including close contests in Tennessee, leaving the full effect of the redrawn maps unresolved.

How the left told it

Left-leaning outlets framed the results as a sweeping Democratic victory that overwhelmed Republican efforts to secure more seats. Rolling Stone said the GOP’s plan “Failed Spectacularly,” while TPM emphasized that some maps “backfired.” Slate and New York Magazine highlighted Black voters and candidates overcoming maps that diluted Black voting strength.

How the right told it

Right-leaning outlets also framed Republican redistricting as a failed strategy overwhelmed by Democratic gains. Breitbart called it “no match for the gigantic anti-Republican wave,” and the Daily Caller’s headline said the efforts “Failed Miserably.” The Epoch Times also noted that California’s Democratic redraw benefited its party.
