Solar Eclipse Darkens Europe

A total solar eclipse crossed Europe on Aug. 12, putting about 15.2 million people in totality and marking the continent’s first such event since 1999. The path ran from the Arctic across Greenland and Iceland to northern Spain and a small part of Portugal, with partial phases visible across much of Europe, the UK and parts of North America. In Spain, millions gathered for the country’s first total eclipse in more than a century, despite heat, wildfire warnings and strained lodging capacity.
