SpaceX Starship Reaches Orbit

SpaceX's giant Starship reached orbit for the first time before ending its test flight early.

What happened

SpaceX’s Starship reached Earth orbit for the first time on its 14th test flight after launching from Starbase in Texas. One engine shut down during ascent, but mission controllers judged the vehicle healthy enough to complete the orbital burn. Starship then deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites, its first operational payload carried to orbit. Earlier Starship flights were suborbital, so this mission marked a key step toward reusable launches for NASA moon missions and future Mars work. SpaceX said it ended the flight early to reduce risk while testing orbital systems and the heat shield. A planned 10-hour mission ended after about three hours.

Left-leaning outlets led with a major SpaceX milestone, while stressing that the achievement remains part of a risky test program. The Guardian emphasized Starship’s size and power in describing the breakthrough. It also lingered on the engine trouble and early caution around the flight. The same framing tied the mission to future moon, Mars, NASA and satellite roles.

Right-leaning outlets cast the flight as a historic breakthrough, with more focus on resilience after a technical setback. The Washington Examiner framed the test as historic for Starship, SpaceX and Musk. The New York Post highlighted that the mission continued despite the engine problem. The Washington Examiner linked the flight to scaling Starlink and SpaceX’s broader ambitions. Fox Business noted the early ending as a limit on the milestone.
