What happened
The New York Giants traded a 2027 fifth-round draft pick to the Minnesota Vikings for quarterback J.J. McCarthy. The move followed a season-ending knee injury to Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart, who had surgery on his left knee. Jameis Winston started in Dart’s place and led New York past Tennessee, but the offense failed to score a touchdown and gained just 238 yards. McCarthy was the No. 10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, then fell behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz in Minnesota. In 10 NFL starts last season, he threw 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The trade is pending McCarthy passing a physical.
How each side covered it
From the left
Left-leaning accounts framed the move as quarterback insurance after Dart’s injury, while leaving more room for McCarthy’s long-term value. CNN emphasized that New York added a young player at football’s key position after Dart went down. The Guardian cast the Giants as unwilling to stand still after a Winston-led win exposed a weak attack. CNN also stressed McCarthy’s slide in Minnesota.
From the right
Right-leaning accounts leaned harder into shock and urgency, presenting the move as a desperate swing on a damaged prospect. The Daily Mail called it a bombshell response to Dart’s injury and labeled McCarthy an NFL bust. It also lingered on his disappointing pro start after a strong college profile. Breitbart News framed the deal through a Harbaugh family link to McCarthy’s Michigan past.
