What happened

The NFL asked the Department of Homeland Security to remove a social-media video using highlights of Hall of Fame safety Brian Dawkins. DHS had posted it on X after quoting or replying to a claim that a “huge migrant caravan” was headed to the southern border, adding the caption “Our time has come.” Dawkins played 16 NFL seasons and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018. The episode follows other Trump administration posts using sports or celebrity footage to promote immigration enforcement. Dawkins said he did not approve the use. DHS defended it as “playing lockdown defense” at the border. The posts remained online after the request.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the post as a clash over immigration imagery, consent and the meaning of violent football footage. The Guardian cast the video as likening hard tackles to how immigrants are treated at the border. The Los Angeles Times emphasized the league’s pushback over unapproved Dawkins and NFL imagery. Raw Story lingered on angry public reaction, especially among Eagles fans.
