What happened

A Washington, D.C., judge permanently dismissed the criminal case against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn over alleged damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Judge Todd Edelman dismissed it with prejudice, meaning prosecutors cannot file the same case again. Edelman said exceptional circumstances justified that step because President Donald Trump had pressured prosecutors to revive a case the Justice Department had moved to drop. The department said Interior Department evidence showed the damage came from a botched renovation installation, not Hearn. Hearn said he was on a bike ride and denied vandalism. Trump criticized the dropped case and urged reinstatement. The government had sought room to bring charges later if new evidence emerged.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the ruling as a final block on a Trump Justice Department revival of a meritless case. CNN emphasized that the court’s order would “ensure charges cannot be brought in the future”. CNN also highlighted Judge Todd Edelman’s view that prosecutors “shot first and asked questions later”. It treated Trump’s pressure as creating a risk of retaliatory prosecution.
