What happened

CBS Sports and Tony Romo mutually agreed to part ways, ending his nine-year run as the network’s top NFL analyst. Romo had been on indefinite leave since his July arrest in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating while intoxicated after a traffic stop following a golf tournament. CBS replaced him on its lead NFL broadcast team with former NFL star J.J. Watt. Romo’s 2020 contract extension was reportedly worth $180 million, with about four years left. Romo said he will focus on his health and family, citing pain, medication dependence, and alcohol use. CBS thanked him and wished him well. Watt will stay with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson this season.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets cast the split as fallout from an arrest that cut short a high-profile broadcasting run. CNN led with the exit after the drunk-driving case, while the Daily Beast stressed Romo’s role on the lead NFL crew. The Daily Beast lingered on public embarrassment from bodycam and sobriety-test details. The Miami Herald highlighted Romo’s explanation about pain, medication, alcohol, and recovery.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets treated the move as expected fallout, while giving more weight to CBS’s on-air replacement plan. Fox News tied the split to Romo’s OWI case and plea, not a normal personnel change. Breitbart emphasized Watt’s strong fill-in work and doubts about Romo’s recent analyst performance. Fox News also framed Romo’s break as a possible reset before another opportunity.
