What happened

The Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 4-3 in Game 3, sweeping the best-of-five AL Division Series and ending New York’s season. In the sixth inning, Anthony Volpe hit a deep fly ball first ruled a two-run homer that would have tied the game. After video review found a fan reached over the wall and interfered, umpires changed it to an RBI double. The Yankees had entered down 2-0 in the series, so the loss eliminated them and extended their title drought to 17 seasons. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the umpires got it right. The Rays advanced to face either Chicago or Cleveland.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the play as a cruel near-rescue, while tying the loss to a broader Yankees failure. CNN lingered on Volpe as the face of a roster and leadership group falling short of the franchise’s legacy. The Guardian reached for the Jeffrey Maier memory, stressing that replay changed the old script.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets led with the reversal as a dramatic and disputed blow, then widened the lens to team flaws. Fox News cast the loss as an embarrassing repeat of weak hitting and stale roster thinking, while crediting Tampa Bay’s cleaner fundamentals and timely hitting.
