Google Launches Googlebooks

What happened

Google is launching Googlebooks, a new premium laptop line with five initial models from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo. The laptops are Android-based computers meant to blend Android apps, ChromeOS-style desktop features, Gemini AI and the Google Play ecosystem. Google is also pitching deep Android phone links, including app handoff, shared notifications, laptop file access and app casting. The first models start at about $899, with prices reaching about $1,299. Google says they will receive up to 10 years of updates and include a year of Google AI Pro. Preorders are open now, with store sales starting October 4.

Left-leaning coverage framed Googlebooks as a major new try at remaking the laptop around Android and AI. The Verge cast the devices as the Android user’s answer to Apple’s phone-and-laptop pairing. It also placed them in MacBook Air and Windows-laptop territory, not the old budget Chromebook lane. Even favorable hands-on pieces stressed that Google still must prove the experience works as shown.
