Overview
Leonard Peltier, a Native American activist, was released from federal prison after President Biden commuted his two life sentences. Peltier was convicted in 1977 for the murders of two FBI agents during a shootout on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1975 and has maintained his innocence. His release, celebrated by supporters as a correction of a historical injustice, drew criticism from law enforcement groups. Peltier is now 80 years old, in declining health, and will serve his remaining days in home confinement, with a homecoming planned in North Dakota.
