Overview
The two E/A-18G Growler jets collided during an aerial demonstration at the Gunfighter Skies Air Show on May 17 at about 12:10 p.m. local time, and all four crew members ejected, officials said.
Videos showed the jets appeared to become sandwiched together before plunging and exploding on impact, and the crash prompted cancellation of the rest of the show, base officials said.
Cmdr. Amelia Umayam said the incident is under investigation and that the Navy is leading recovery and security efforts.
Only one of the four crew members was injured and was being treated at a hospital, and the jets were assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron 129, which maintains 55 Growlers at Whidbey Island.
The 366th Fighter Wing said a portion of State Highway 167 will remain closed for several days while investigators continue their work and more information is released.
Analysis
Center-leaning sources present the incident neutrally, relying on official statements, eyewitness accounts, and aviation experts. Reporting emphasizes factual details—injuries, investigation, and safety context—without loaded language or selective omission. Evaluative language appears as quoted expert reaction, which is source content rather than editorial framing.
