U.S.-Iran War Escalation

The administration and Pentagon have mishandled U.S. troop casualties from the Iran war through undercounting, obscuring, or denying proper recognition. Trump has also exploited or minimized the deaths of service members to defend the war in a disrespectful way.

Trump’s threatened attacks on Iran would be unlawful if they used disproportionate force or targeted civilian infrastructure. Destroying infrastructure or launching massive retaliation for U.S. deaths or shipping attacks would amount to an illegal escalation and likely war crimes.

The Iran war is becoming expensive, unpopular, strategically unclear, and unlikely to achieve its stated aims. Washington should curb or end the fighting rather than keep pouring money into a conflict that is not truly winding down.

The Iran conflict and Houthi attacks are threatening key oil and shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, Bab al-Mandab, and the Red Sea. That disruption is pushing up crude prices, straining markets, raising consumer costs, and widening the regional economic and military fallout.

Pickaxe Mountain is a heavily fortified suspected Iranian nuclear site that has become a focus of Trump’s threats to expand strikes on Iran. Its geology and underground facilities make it a difficult target, and threatening it has intensified U.S.-Iran tensions.

Iran should be held responsible for attacks by its regime and proxy forces, including the Houthis. The United States is justified in imposing major military costs, continuing the war until it secures real gains, and even neutralizing the regime if necessary.
