At least five people were killed, hundreds were injured and nine remained missing after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Kumamoto prefecture on Kyushu on Tuesday. Rescue crews searched the partially collapsed Aeon Mall in Kumamoto, where the second floor gave way amid reports of an explosion, and a Nippon Paper Industries plant in Yatsushiro, where a chimney collapsed. The quake knocked out power and water to tens of thousands, damaged roads, bridges and buildings, and prompted a tsunami advisory that was later lifted.
