French Museum Renoirs Stolen

Thieves stole four Pierre-Auguste Renoir paintings from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer early Tuesday, then abandoned two in the museum garden as they fled, leaving two works missing. Mayor Bryan Masson said two intruders cut through a garden fence, entered the museum, removed four of its 12 Renoirs from their frames and were gone in about five minutes after the alarm sounded at 5:48 a.m. Police are searching for the suspects, and the mayor’s office urged more government funding for security at cultural institutions.
