The reporting
Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi forces seized the Red Sea port city of Mokha on Sept. 10 after days of fighting with forces loyal to the internationally recognized, Saudi-backed government. Mokha is about 75 kilometers from the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the southern gateway to the Red Sea route linking Asia and Europe, and roughly 50 miles north of Perim Island. The advance extends Houthi control along Yemen’s southwest coast as fighting resumes after a four-year truce. Saudi Arabia has responded with airstrikes after Houthi missile and drone attacks on its oil facilities.

Shipping threatLeans Right
The Houthis’ seizure of Mocha creates a serious new danger to maritime traffic near a major chokepoint. Because the group is backed by Iran, the move also risks widening and complicating the regional conflict.
