What happened
Today, attention shifted to a Russian drone strike on a train near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk crossing on Ukraine’s border with Poland, close to NATO territory. Ukraine’s rail operator said there were no casualties. It said a diplomatic train carrying Boris Johnson, Carl Bildt and EU security advisers had left early shortly before the strike, and was highly likely the target. David Petraeus was also reported near the station or route. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said NATO would increase support and eastern-flank defenses.
How each side covered it
From the left
Left-leaning coverage framed the strike as an intimidation attempt that should harden Western resolve. The Guardian reported Rutte said the attack near Poland would not deter Kyiv’s backers, calling it a sign of Putin’s desperation and an effort to undermine unity. It also noted European condemnation and Ukrainian Railways’ view that Boris Johnson’s earlier train may have been targeted. HuffPost reported David Petraeus was on another train at Yahodyn and that no immediate train casualties were reported.
From the right
Right-leaning coverage stressed Russian recklessness near the Ukraine-Poland border and the risk to high-profile visitors. The New York Post reported Rutte said the attacks would push NATO to increase support for Kyiv and showed Moscow’s growing desperation. It also reported Ukraine’s rail operator said the drone likely targeted the diplomatic train carrying Boris Johnson, Carl Bildt and EU security advisers. RedState argued Russia had been informed of the diplomatic train’s route and timing.
