What happened
Iran-backed Houthi forces pushed farther along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, while Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline was temporarily shut after a drone attack from Iraq. The pipeline carries crude across Saudi Arabia, so the strike threatened exports already exposed near the Bab al-Mandab shipping chokepoint. Trump administration officials held secret talks with Houthi representatives in Muscat, where the Houthis pledged not to attack U.S. or Israeli vessels and said they remained committed to the 2025 ceasefire. Saudi Arabia has struck Houthi positions in Yemen, while the Houthis say they hit Saudi military and energy targets. Brent crude rose above $100 a barrel, raising inflation fears.
How each side covered it
From the left
Left-leaning outlets framed the fighting as a strategic Houthi expansion with serious civilian and economic stakes, rather than mainly an Iran-front war. The New York Times cited analysts describing an offensive that could reshape Yemen’s balance of power. The Guardian lingered on families forced from homes and the danger to a vital trade route. Democracy Now! emphasized U.S. and Saudi limits as the conflict widened.
From the right
Right-leaning outlets framed the attacks as an Iran-driven proxy escalation, with less focus on Yemen’s internal front lines. Fox News led with Tehran’s role in empowering cross-border strikes against Saudi Arabia and Red Sea shipping. The Patriot Post cast the Houthis as a terrorist or fanatical force, not a regular combatant. It also treated the fighting as another front in a broader Iran war.
