What happened

UAE authorities said the Flydubai co-pilot on flight FZ1073 attacked the captain with a crash axe and tried to seize control in an attempted terrorist attack. Media reports identified the co-pilot as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, while UAE officials had not initially confirmed his identity. Sources said Oman had barred al-Hammami from flying over concerns about extremist views before he later took an administrative role at Oman Air. Flydubai hired him afterward, raising questions about airline vetting and Israel-route cockpit security. The aircraft carried more than 170 people and dropped about 17,000 feet before passengers and crew subdued the attacker. UAE investigators are examining motive and possible terrorist links.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning accounts framed the case as alleged radicalization meeting a breakdown in airline screening. The New York Times cited people briefed on the matter saying the co-pilot had embraced extreme Islamist views, while also stressing questions about background checks. The Guardian highlighted the prosecutor general’s account of passengers and crew stabilizing the plane.

From the right

Right-leaning accounts led with the rescue and treated the attack as an attempted terrorist seizure of an Israel-bound plane. The New York Post emphasized heroic passengers taking control, while citing UAE prosecutor general Hamad Saif Al Shamsi on an attempted “terrorist attack”. Fox News focused on prior extremist-view concerns as a warning airline vetting missed.
