What happened

A Russian drone struck Kyiv’s Northern Bridge while cars were crossing Sunday, creating a large fireball and smoke plume. Ukraine and Germany were working toward joint production of drones, missiles and related technology, including systems to counter Russia’s fast jet-powered drones. The strike followed attacks on Kyiv’s major bridges, with the Northern Bridge hit on two consecutive days after repeated strikes on the Southern Bridge. Germany had become Ukraine’s largest donor, giving more than €43 billion since Russia’s full-scale invasion. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Kyiv to show support, while Russia’s Foreign Ministry warned foreigners and diplomats to leave. Germany was expected to provide €1 billion in military aid and €350 million for energy repairs.

How each side covered it

Left-leaning outlets framed the bridge strike as part of a widening Russian aerial campaign against Ukrainian cities, with emphasis on Kyiv under growing pressure. CNN described Russia as escalating its campaign against Ukraine’s capital while highlighting Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit as a show of solidarity. The Seattle Times cited Merz’s argument that the defense partnership was “not a one-way street”.
