What happened

Israelis marked the third anniversary of the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attacks with memorials across the country. The attackers killed about 1,200 people in Israel and took 251 hostage, triggering the war in Gaza. The anniversary was the first since all hostages, living and dead, had been returned. Despite a ceasefire deal reached nearly a year earlier, Israeli strikes in Gaza continued, and more than half of the territory remained under Israeli military control. Israel says its campaign targeted Hamas; a UN commission concluded Israel committed genocide in Gaza, which Israel rejects. The war has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians. Israel’s next general election is scheduled for Oct. 27.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the anniversary as grief sharpened by division, with accountability and Gaza’s toll central to the story. CNN emphasized bereaved families demanding a change in leadership after the failure to protect Israelis. Al Jazeera cited observers who linked national trauma to far-right politics and dehumanization of Palestinians. MS NOW cast the war as a test of universal democratic principles.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the anniversary around Israeli endurance, Jewish security and the ideological meaning of Hamas’s attack. Fox News highlighted resilience, focusing on survivors rebuilding after an assault meant to break Israel’s sense of safety. American Thinker centered global antisemitism and intimidation of Jewish communities after the attack. The Daily Wire argued Hamas’s violence should be understood through Islamic theology.
