What happened

Ukrainian officials said new speed limits on Starshield connections disrupted military missions, including drone operations, by restricting systems moving faster than about 100 mph. Ukraine’s military relies on Starlink and Starshield for battlefield communications and drones used in defense and attacks. The dispute came as President Donald Trump pressed Ukraine to halt strikes on Russian energy sites and claimed an energy ceasefire that both sides disputed. Ukrainian officials said they received no warning, while Elon Musk said Starshield is controlled by the U.S. military and ultimately the president. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the limits a major mistake. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said partial service returned, but full access remained unresolved.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets cast the limits as part of pressure on Kyiv, with the danger measured in battlefield weakness rather than tech inconvenience. MS NOW framed Trump’s stance as an attempt to force Ukraine toward capitulation while weakening its drone use. The New York Times emphasized growing confusion in Kyiv over American support and the rules around military Starlink use.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets led with the limits as a direct threat to Ukraine’s war effort, while highlighting Musk’s effort to shift responsibility to Washington. The New York Post cited Zelenskyy’s warning that the move would cost lives, and said Musk pointed to U.S. control of Starshield. Daily Mail focused on Zelenskyy’s view that Trump had betrayed Ukraine.
