What happened

Gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in Hamoud, in Jordan’s Karak governorate, killing 7 people and wounding about 34. Jordanian officials described the attack as terrorist and said extremists carried it out, but they did not name a group or establish the attackers’ affiliations. Jordan is a majority-Muslim country with a small Christian minority, and deadly attacks on Christians there are rare. Karak has a longstanding Christian community and a history of Christian-Muslim coexistence. King Abdullah II condemned the attack and vowed the harshest penalties. Security footage appeared to show 3 gunmen moving toward the entrance. The attackers remain unidentified, and authorities said the search and investigation were ongoing.

How the left told it

Left-leaning outlets emphasized the shock of mourners being targeted and the government’s appeal to unity after the attack. CNN leaned on a witness’s account that the victims were gathered to grieve, while also calling the attack unprecedented for Jordan. Al Jazeera focused on officials’ promise that the perpetrators would be caught and national unity would hold.

How the right told it

Right-leaning outlets framed the attack as terrorism against Christians, with stronger attention to punishment and religious targeting. Fox News centered King Abdullah II’s message that bullets would not divide Jordanians and that unity would withstand the violence. Christian Post described the attackers as Islamic extremists and stressed that Christians were targeted at worship. Daily Mail placed the attack against Jordan’s record of coexistence.
