Police arrested a 39-year-old suspect shortly afterward and took him into custody. The shooting came as France prepared for further demonstrations after protests the previous weekend turned violent. French President Emmanuel Macron
Emmanuel MacronPresident of France and Co-Prince of Andorra since 2017 described the shooting as a racist terrorist attack. How the left told it
Left-leaning outlets framed the attack as an attempted massacre rooted in racism, with unity against division as the broader answer. CNN centered Mayor Ali Rabeh’s view that the shooter seemed to fire at random and appeared intent on a massacre. The Guardian emphasized Macron’s description of a racist terrorist attack and his warning about racism in France’s public climate.
How the right told it
Right-leaning outlets treated the attack as suspected racist terrorism while tying it to France’s wider security strain and unrest.
