Residents began evacuating Russian-occupied Oleshky on Friday under a localized ceasefire. The pause enabled a humanitarian convoy to enter the Kherson region town, deliver aid and start moving people out. Oleshky has been under Russian occupation since 2022, with about 2,000 residents, including children, left amid heavy destruction and shortages. The truce applied only to this operation, while fighting continued elsewhere in Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine said residents could leave or stay, with aid promised for those remaining. The White House credited Melania Trump with brokering the deal, while the Vatican credited Pope Leo XIV’s calls. The ceasefire was due to last through Sunday evening.

Left-leaning outlets framed the evacuation as a rare humanitarian opening for civilians trapped by destruction and dangerous escape routes. CNN stressed that mined roads and drones had made escape impossible, while crediting American mediation for securing the pause. PBS NewsHour emphasized unusual cooperation between Russia and Ukraine in carrying out the operation.
