On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema in Alexandria, Virginia, rejected the Justice Department’s request to force Alphabet’s Google to sell its online advertising exchange, AdX. The ruling spares Google’s advertising technology business from a breakup but orders the company to change how the digital ads system at the center of the case operates. Brinkema had ruled in April 2025 that Google illegally obtained and maintained monopoly power in two advertising technology markets. The decision follows a separate court ruling that declined to make Google sell Chrome.
