What happened

National Guard members intervened in a fight Sunday night near the 400 block of 8th Street SE in Washington’s Eastern Market neighborhood. A person involved pulled out a gun and fired, then pointed it at Guard members after they ordered the weapon dropped. The Guard members returned fire. One Guardsman was shot in the leg, and the suspect was wounded in the abdomen. Both injuries were non-life-threatening, and both were taken to hospitals. The suspect was arrested after the shooting. President Trump deployed National Guard troops to Washington in August 2025 as part of a crime-fighting mission. Police said about eight Guardsmen were present, and three fired. Investigators have not determined whose shot hit the suspect. Police said they do not yet know what caused the fight and asked witnesses to contact investigators.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: Boston Globe, under the headline “National Guard member is shot while breaking up a fight in Washington, suspect is hit in return…”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the shooting around danger to Guard members and the need for their presence in Washington. The New York Post emphasized a defensive response, citing Jeffrey Carroll saying a man “pulled out a firearm” before the Guard returned fire. The Gateway Pundit tied the episode to a prior deadly ambush by an Afghan national. RedState said the Guard’s presence had helped reduce crime.
