What happened

Eva Marie Saint died at 102 on Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles. Her representative said she died of natural causes, surrounded by family and loved ones. Saint won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for her film debut as Edie Doyle in Elia Kazan’s drama On the Waterfront, opposite Marlon Brando. She later played secret agent Eve Kendall opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller North by Northwest. Saint often turned down film work while raising her children, saying she could make only one film a year. Her career spanned more than seven decades across film and television. She won an Emmy for People Like Us.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Saint as a golden-age figure whose artistry endured because she paired screen glamour with unusual independence. The New York Times stressed her secure place in movie history and her range in both painful drama and romantic suspense. HuffPost lingered on her choice to resist Hollywood’s demands and put family first.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets emphasized Saint’s classic-Hollywood stature while broadening her legacy beyond the best-known pair of roles. Fox News highlighted her iconic work with legendary leading men as proof of her lasting place in film history. Daily Mail pointed to an award-winning career across film and television, not just her signature movie performances.
