What happened

Actor RJ Mitte died at age 34 on October 12 in Brownsville, Texas, his representatives and local officials confirmed. Mitte became widely known as Walter White Jr., the son of Bryan Cranston’s character, on Breaking Bad. He appeared from the five-season show’s debut, when he was 15. Mitte lived with cerebral palsy, as did his character, and drew on that experience in the role. He later promoted disability awareness, inclusion, and greater representation through several advocacy roles. His representatives called him a beloved actor, philanthropist, and disability-rights advocate, and asked for privacy. Co-stars Aaron Paul and Dean Norris mourned him. No cause of death has been officially disclosed. Police said they suspected no foul play, and an autopsy will be performed.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Mitte’s death through his place in a landmark drama and his disability advocacy, emphasizing legacy over circumstances. The Guardian lingered on Breaking Bad’s acclaim while citing Mitte’s representatives on the authenticity he brought from living with cerebral palsy.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets treated the loss as both a celebrity tragedy and, in one strand, a story about the circumstances of death. Fox News centered the familiar Breaking Bad role while noting that his public life included disability-rights advocacy and inclusion. The Gateway Pundit cited TMZ’s claim that the death was by suicide, making that assertion central to its framing.
