What happened

Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s documentary “You Can See Everything” opened to about $15 million in North America. The Elizabeth Holmes film finished second for the weekend, behind “Street Fighter,” which took about $31 million. Holmes founded Theranos, a blood-testing company once valued at $9 billion after claiming it could run hundreds of tests from a finger-prick sample. Investigations found Theranos used conventional lab equipment, and Holmes was convicted of defrauding investors. She was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison. The filmmakers followed Holmes and her family for more than a month before she reported to prison. The film is set to expand nationwide in the coming weeks.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the opening as a rare documentary breakout and a sign of major cultural force. HuffPost stressed the gap between huge buzz and a limited theater count. MS NOW treated the film as a study of deception and self-presentation, not a simple innocence case. Daily Beast pushed its secret star performance as worthy of historic Oscar attention.
