The reporting

A neutral summary of the key facts most sources agree on, drawn from reporting across the political spectrum.

New Mexico Judge Bryan Biedscheid ordered Meta on Aug. 6 to pay $567 million into a youth mental health fund after finding Facebook and Instagram contributed to a public nuisance. The order follows $375 million in civil penalties imposed by a jury in March, bringing Meta’s liability in the state case to about $942 million. Biedscheid also ordered teen-safety changes, including usage limits, default-hidden like counts for minors and visible risk warnings, in the lawsuit Attorney General Raúl Torrez filed in 2023.
