Seven people, including Cleveland Police constables Matthew Blades and Tom Clough, were killed when a Volkswagen Passat collided head-on with their marked police car on the A66 near Middlesbrough at 3:39 a.m. The Passat, carrying five members of the public, was travelling the wrong way during a police pursuit when it hit the police vehicle travelling in the correct direction. All seven people were pronounced dead at the scene. Police were still working to formally identify some of the Passat occupants and had informed families of those already identified.
