A powerful nor’easter is flooding roads, battering coasts and knocking out power.
What happened
A strong early-season nor’easter is battering the Northeast with dangerous winds, heavy rain, coastal flooding and high waves through the weekend. The storm has canceled concerts and festivals, postponed events, and disrupted flights at airports in Boston, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. It is hitting a broad stretch from Virginia through New England, with the worst flooding expected near New Jersey and Delaware. New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency, while New York City urged caution through a travel advisory. More than 70,000 customers lost electricity as streets flooded along the Jersey Shore. Multiple high tides could worsen flooding and leave roads, homes and businesses underwater.
