Northeast Nor’easter Turns Deadly
A powerful nor’easter brought deadly flooding, high winds and outages to the Northeast.
What happened
A slow-moving nor’easter killed Leighton Brown, a 56-year-old New York City Housing Authority employee, when a falling tree struck him in Brooklyn on Saturday. The storm battered the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic with heavy rain, strong winds, dangerous surf and coastal flooding through the weekend. Forecasters said it was lingering offshore and could stall or loop near the New Jersey coast, keeping high tide cycles dangerous. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill declared emergencies in hard-hit areas, while officials urged residents away from the water. Emergency crews and utilities worked to restore power after outages topped 100,000 customers across the region. The National Weather Service warned gusts near 50 mph and more tidal flooding could last into Monday night.
