What happened
Jane Doe’s lawyer says the former Cornell student has received multiple threats pressuring her to withdraw her civil lawsuit, and says he was also threatened. Doe sued Cornell University and seven Chi Phi fraternity members, alleging they sexually assaulted her over several hours in October 2024 while she was under the influence of ketamine, alcohol and marijuana. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor after criticism of the Tompkins County district attorney’s handling. People trying to identify Doe have threatened at least three women mistaken for her. Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff said the university would review fraternities and sororities, with an independent review still pending.
How each side covered it
From the left
Left-leaning outlets framed the case as a test of institutional accountability, emphasizing university and law enforcement choices. CNN tied the scrutiny to how Cornell and authorities handled the case, and cited experts who said Doe’s denial and shame fit a typical survivor pattern. The Seattle Times described “I am Jane Doe” posts as digital-age protection and solidarity encouraging survivors to speak out.
From the right
Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: Washington Examiner, under the headline “Jane Doe lawyer rips Trump's 'fair shake' remark in Cornell rape case: 'Just wrong'”.
