What happened
Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff said the university will take a serious look at fraternities and sororities, seeking input on how to preserve their benefits while strengthening accountability and safety. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor, moving the criminal investigation from the local prosecutor after concerns about its handling. A former Cornell student identified as Jane Doe alleges she was drugged and raped by multiple Chi Phi members in October 2024, when she was 20. Kotlikoff called the allegations deeply disturbing and said Cornell must do better. The accused men deny wrongdoing. Cornell’s board is expected to announce an independent outside review.
How each side covered it
From the left
Left-leaning outlets framed the case as a campus-safety reckoning and an institutional accountability crisis, not only a criminal probe. The Guardian emphasized outrage over fraternity culture and cited stakeholders who warned that shifting federal rules have created a chaotic system. HuffPost focused on demands for greater transparency in Cornell’s response.
From the right
Right-leaning outlets focused on due process concerns while still treating Greek life as a subject for scrutiny. The Gateway Pundit said Kotlikoff treated disputed claims as settled and welcomed a handoff to a far-left attorney general despite conflicting evidence. The Washington Examiner lingered on Kotlikoff’s warning about party culture and Cornell’s handling.
