What happened

A 12-year-old girl was killed and three adults were injured at Leon Day Park in Baltimore during a youth football event. In a separate shooting in Vienna, Georgia, two men were killed and about 35 people were injured at a homecoming-weekend block party. Police said two men in Baltimore began shooting after an apparent parking-space argument, and the girl was caught in the crossfire. Dooly County High School’s superintendent said the Georgia party was not school-sponsored. More than 1,000 people were at the Georgia gathering, where authorities said at least 50 shots were fired at two locations. Baltimore police are seeking suspects, with no arrests reported. Georgia investigators had not disclosed a suspect or motive.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: The Guardian, under the headline “Mass shootings leave two people dead in Georgia and 12-year-old girl dead in Baltimore”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets told the shootings as public celebrations shattered by reckless violence, with emphasis on immediate blame and scale. Fox News centered Richard Worley’s account of a parking-space dispute and an innocent child caught in crossfire. The New York Post led on the Georgia homecoming party as a mass shooting defined by deaths and hospitalizations.
