What happened

Steven Hamilton, 71, was attacked and killed by a nearly 12-foot alligator while fishing along the shore at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park by Lake Apopka in Winter Garden, near Orlando. Wildlife trappers later captured and killed the alligator involved. It was Florida’s second fatal alligator attack this year, after 31-year-old Brittany Clark was killed in June. Lake Apopka has many alligators, though authorities had not received a shoreline sighting report before the attack. Police Captain Michael Mason urged people to stay aware, respect wildlife and keep their distance. Other alligators complicated the response, and Hamilton’s body was recovered about two hours later. Winter Garden police and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are jointly investigating.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the death as part of Florida’s wider alligator risk, with attention to policy scrutiny and public-safety warnings. CNN placed Hamilton’s death in the year’s fatal attack count and cited Greg Steube’s push to study whether federal protections affect nuisance removals. The Guardian leaned on Mason’s warning that a familiar state symbol can still be dangerous.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets emphasized the force of the shoreline attack and the danger posed by alligators in the water. The New York Post led with the huge predator overpowering a fisherman, then used Mason’s warning to stress distance from wildlife. Daily Mail focused on first responders’ difficulty reaching the body while avoiding other dangerous animals.
